Rome gives up on F1 race plans

Rome has now officially given up on its plans to hold a Formula 1 street race - as the Italian city says its efforts are now switching to securing the Olympics. After months of speculation about whether a grand prix could be put on in Rome's streets, the hopes of an event were dashed a few weeks ago when Bernie Ecclestone wrote a letter to organisers stating that no country would be allowed to hold two races in their country. With Monza already having a long-term deal to host the Italian Grand Prix, that all but killed off Rome's hopes of landing a race.

Steve Wallace to enter Daytona 500

NASCAR Nationwide Series regular Steve Wallace will make his Sprint Cup debut next month at Daytona, driving for his father's Rusty Wallace Racing team in the season opener. The 23-year-old, son of former Cup champion Rusty Wallace, who fields his own team in NASCAR's second-tier series, will make the jump up together with his family's outfit, which will enter the #77 Toyota Camry in the Daytona 500. Wallace, who has finished in the top 10 in the Nationwide Series points in the past two years, will have his start in the race guaranteed after his team was able to secure a deal to have the 2010 owner points transferred from Penske Racing's #77 car of Sam Hornish Jr, who is not expected to compete for the team in the Cup series this year.

Auto Club Speedway's Lone Race Reduced to 400 Miles

A California diet continued at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana with the announcement Tuesday that the track's sole NASCAR Sprint Cup race in March this year has been shortened from 500 to 400 miles.

The announcement comes as the Southern California speedway begins to promote its only Sprint Cup race of 2011 after seven years of two annual races, both of which generally suffered for attendance.

The speedway's final fall event last October was shortened to 400 miles and received positive reviews, the speedway said. Tony Stewart won that race by about a half-second over Clint Bowyer as drivers used many grooves through the turns of the two-mile oval.

"We're confident the newly remileaged Auto Club 400 will continue the momentum we have been experiencing and that March's race will be the most exciting ever at Auto Club Speedway," speedway President Gillian Zucker said.

Like many facilities, Auto Club Speedway is also reaching out to fans with special ticket offers, such as a free, pre-race pit pass to any fan who purchases a $75 upper reserved seat ticket by Feb. 25.

The race will take the green flag at noon on Sunday, March 27, with FOX providing the live telecast.

2010 Team Reviews: RCR Showcases Great Improvement

If there was an award for the biggest season-to-season turnaround by an entire team, the folks at Welcome, N.C.'s Richard Childress Racing would have walked away with an uncontested victory.

In a word, their change in competitiveness from 2009 to 2010 was astonishing.

In fact, RCR placed all three of its drivers in the 2010 Chase for the Sprint Cup -- quite a change after those same three wheelmen missed the championship fight completely in 2009.

Yes, 2009 was a drag for the proud organization, with Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick all missing victory lane. That all changed -- and changed quickly in 2010 -- when Harvick assumed the points lead after just ten races.

He didn't relinquish it until the Chase standings were shuffled and the drivers seeded in September.

Had the RCR bunch managed to string together a more-dominating late performance by Harvick or even avoided the Chase-ravaging penalty levied against Clint Bowyer after winning at New Hampshire, the team as a whole may have moved higher up the NASCAR team ladder.

Lotus Type 125 makes its track debut

Lotus has taken the time to put its new civilian Formula One racer through its paces. The company enlisted the help of both Jean Alesi and James Rossiter to test the Exos Type 125 in its first official track outing. Rossiter serves as the company's official test driver, so he's been in the seat of some pretty wild machines. Even so, the racer says that the Type 125 is "unique, intense and extremely raw." On top of that, Rossiter claims the open-wheel beast is as close as a mortal human can get to man-handling the tiller of a genuine F1 car.

There's no surprise there. The Type 125 packs a 3.5-liter Cosworth V8 at its core with 650 horsepower. The miracle mill is strapped to a six-speed semi-automatic gearbox, and Lotus says that all it takes to wake the beast is a push of the start button. That means that owners won't require their own personal squad of mechanics just to get out of the paddock. If you like the sound of this machine as much as we do, you better know someone at Lotus. The company is only planning on handing out 15 examples of the Type 125. Hit the jump for the press release.

Jeremy Clarkson has gone 21st century. The co-host of the BBC's Top Gear, along with publisher Penguin Books, has created an app for the iPad called iClarkson, and it features over 140 of his automotive reviews that were taken from his books Driven to Distraction and Don't Stop Me Now.

The app is styled to look like a study and is loaded with interactive features. Images of automobiles adorn the "walls", Clarkson's drum kit sits in the corner and many more surprises are in store for iPad users who pony up the $7.99 to buy iClarkson. Click past the jump to see the app in action.
