Ron Hornaday Jr. Flips in Wild Talladega Crash, Walks Away Unhurt

NASCAR truck series driver Ron Hornaday Jr. walked away from a wild crash in the NASCAR series truck race at Talladega Superspeedway Saturday that saw his truck flip onto its roof and then tumble several times on the high-banked first turn.Hornaday's No. 33 Chevy truck, owned by Kevin Harvick, came to a stop on its roof, but the driver soon emerged without a scratch.
"I brought the steering wheel back," Hornaday told SPEED TV, holding the wheel in his hand after being released from the infield care center. "If you can't win, you gotta bring the steering wheel back. But it was cool to come here. I led a lot of laps and learned a bunch. Too bad we ruined a good truck."
The crash, which occurred with three laps to go, involved five other trucks and prompted NASCAR to bring out a red flag and then finish the race with a green-white-checkered, two-lap shootout.
The finish was just as wild, as Kyle Busch nearly lost control of his truck going to the inside of Aric Almirola, but nipped Almirola at the line by .002 of a second, or about a foot. Johnny Sauter went to the outside of Almirola and made it three wide at the finish, but crossed under the flag in third.

After showing off the Tacoma RTR Concept, we didn't think Toyota could find another way to toy with our emotions. We were wrong. Rob Kauffman, the owner of RK Collection and co-owner of Michael Waltrip Racing, has teamed up with Toyota Racing development to produce a street-legal, NASCAR-inspired high-performance Camry.
Those words don't seem like they should go together, but the parts list for the RK Collection Toyota Camry NASCAR Edition reads like the shopping list for a potential dream car. The most important piece of that list sits under the hood: a 358 cubic inch TRD NASCAR V8 engine producing 680 horsepower, which is paired with a Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission.
It's as if Rob Kauffman was reading our dreams and then built the most exciting Camry on the planet. The RK Collection Toyota Camry NASCAR Edition will be waiting for our cameras (and our hearts) at the rapidly approaching SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Hit the jump for the press release.

2011 Nissan Leaf real-world range test covers 116.1 miles

Initially, Nissan quoted the Leaf's estimated range at an even 100 miles. From the beginning, we knew that this number was more or less an average of what the car could travel between charges and not a figure that was set in stone for all drivers on any given day. Recently, the automaker laid out some variable range estimates that took weather variations, speed, HVAC settings and more into account. These showed that the Leaf's operating range could drop as low as 47 miles and top out at 138 miles under ideal circumstances.
Real-world results are usually a better indicator than drawn-up estimates, however, and Plugin Cars writer Nick Chambers was recently given the chance to conduct a total range test of the battery-powered Leaf. Chambers plotted a course from Nissan North America's headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee to the famous Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg. The 116.1-mile drive took Chambers across country roads, through small towns flooded with stoplights and onto local byways. Chambers claims that he didn't drive aggressively and often stayed below posted speeds, but did not baby the Leaf "like an obsessed hypermiler" might have.
In the end, the Leaf made the trip; that's 116.1 miles traveled under real-world conditions. The range-testing run utilized around 22.76 kW of the Leaf's total 24 kWh battery, indicating that it was pushed to the limits. Surprisingly, Chambers claims to have called upon the cool air of the range-depleting A/C system for much of the journey. He also engaged the Leaf's range-boosting Eco-mode before starting his jaunt, giving us a decent prediction for what a green-footed driver can expect.

Former MotoGP rider Gabor Talmacsi has taken his first Moto2 pole position as his quick time at the end of Friday afternoon practice proved crucial when qualifying was cancelled due to poor weather at Estoril. All three world championship classes saw their qualifying sessions called off amid persistent downpours, but the Moto2 field had at least managed to get a little bit of running on slicks as the track dried in practice two. Speed Up rider Talmacsi's 1m50.916s lap in that session therefore gave him pole, ahead of Julian Simon (Aspar Suter) and champion Toni Elias (Gresini Moriwaki)

Beijing Guoan's John Martin led from start to finish to win the opening race at the new Navarra track in Spain during the final round of the Superleague Formula season. Chrysler next to get billions in federal technology loans?

Chrysler, the recently bankrupt automaker that accepted billions in government aid last year, is reportedly next in line to receive new technology loans from the U.S. Department of Energy. Ford, Tesla, and Nissan have all applied and been approved for these technology loans that come out of a $25 billion program approved by Congress back in 2007. The federal funds are meant to be used for retooling factories, making the way for production of more fuel efficient vehicles.
Chrysler's loan request totals $10 billion, nearly twice as much as the $5.7 billion it still owes the U.S. Treasury for last year's bailout. Approval of the loan is reportedly fluid, which means that the DoE has not yet established a timeline for granting the funds, but Automotive News cites sources with financial and auto industry expertise who suggest that Chrysler's bid for aid will receive a sign-off before similar loan requests made by General Motors. That's because GM's in the middle of prepping for its initial public stock offering next month, and approving its loan requests would only make matters more complicated.

Denny Hamlin Gets Serious as Chase Crunch Arrives

Making eye contact with reporters, speaking in a strong voice,gesturing for emphasis, Denny Hamlin all but declared the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship was his to lose in the hour after he won the final regular season race Sept. 11 at his home track in Richmond, Va.His body language seemed to challenge anyone to believe differently. And five races into the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup, Hamlin is every bit on track to back up the words.
He felt he could win or contend on every single of the 10 Chase tracks and, in the past, it might have seemed more bravado than measured confidence from the NASCAR "young gun."
But this is a different Hamlin. The 2010 Hamlin model says the proper championship mindset has at last matched his considerable talent. And he is doing everything he needs to do to give four-time defending series champ Jimmie Johnson a real run for a fifth.
Johnson holds a 41-point edge over second place Hamlin entering Sunday's race at the half-mile Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, where the Tums Fast Relief 500 is being billed as mano y mano -- a heavyweight fight of sorts between Hamlin and Johnson, who have combined to win every race there in the last four years.
"People would think so, I would think so,'' Hamlin said of comparing the race to a title fight. "I feel like if it is mano y mano, we've been in a lot of green-white-checkers where we've been on the front row together, so it should be interesting.''

Back in May, CBS Evening News reported that the Nissan Leaf could sprint to 60 miles per hour in five seconds. We knew that their report missed the mark, but by how much? Estimates from nine to as much as 12 seconds began to surface, but those seemed a bit out-of-line as well.
Now, thanks to John O'Dell of Green Car Advisor who timed a 0-60 mph dash during a recent drive in the Leaf, we have at least one unofficial result: 0-60 mph in seven seconds flat. To put that number in perspective, 0-60 mph runs in the Chevrolet Volt have been clocked at 8.8 seconds, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV takes nearly 12 seconds and the Tesla Roadster accomplishes the feat in a mere 3.7 seconds. Okay, so the Leaf is reasonably quick, but how fast does it really go?
O'Dell, the senior editor of Green Car Advisor, writes:
Mark Perry, Nissan's director of product planning, confirmed that an undisclosed journalist who recently drove the Leaf in Michigan, hit an even more impressive 94 miles per hour, but as far as we know, these are just indicated speeds, not independently verified and repeated. Still, for the sake of comparison, the Smart ED apparently tops out at about 62.5 mph, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV calls it quits at 81 mph and the Volt hits the century mark. So, the Leaf is emissions free, accelerates with (relative) vigor and closes in on 100 before returning to more sane, everyday speeds. Sounds like it can offer livable everyday performance - provided the pure EV's range isn't an issue.On an 82-degree Tennessee afternoon, with another writer in the passenger seat, I hit 92 mph on the highway, going up a slight hill all the way. I still felt as though there was a little bit more to go, but lifted my foot at 92 because I thought I spied a state trooper's patrol car way back down the road.

Kasey Kahne, who was released Wednesday night as the driver of the Richard Petty Motorsports No. 9 Budweiser Ford, came on the scene in 2003, when RPM was still Evernham Motorsports. In the seven years since, he's racked up 11 victories, including an impressive six victories in 2006.
But Kahne was a lame duck at RPM, and he and longtime crew chief Kenny Francis had previously announced their intentions to race for Red Bull Racing in 2011 as a stopover point before Kahne's move to Hendrick Motorsports' No. 5 car in 2012.
